FAQ
Why is grooming so expensive?
There are a lot of factors that go into the cost of grooming. The products used, equipment, overhead of each individual business, the training and skill of the grooming staff, etc. we use top of the line equipment such as Les Poochs brushes, Spa Treatment shampoo and conditioners, a massaging bathing system and so much more. Just as an example, our slicker brushes alone cost $70 each, but we use them because they are the best, and therefore the work we are able to do is that much better. Even the best groomer cannot excel at her job with inferior equipment and supplies. We also attend yearly seminars and trade shows to stay abreast of the latest techniques, trends, and equipment available. This helps to guarantee that our clients get the absolute best service possible.
How long does it take to groom?
The grooming process usually takes between an hour to 3 hours, depending on the same factors mentioned above. Quality takes precedence, but at the same time we take the comfort of your pet seriously and will get through the process as efficiently as possible.
Eye cleaning
- Eye mucus can not only impair your dog's vision, but it may harden (creating eye crusts) and even lead to infections. These eye crusts can be difficult to remove on your own, and may cause your dog pain. Our method softens the hardened mucus which is then then gently removed.
How do I know if my pet’s fur is matted?
If you cannot comb through your pet’s hair by the roots, your pet is matted. If you can pull the mats out with your fingers, your pet can be de matted. If there are knots that are tightly webbed, these mats won't come out and your pet may have to be shaved in order for new hair to grow back. Shaving doesn't have to mean bare-naked and ugly- we will attempt to make your pet look stylish by saving as much hair as possible..
Washing
- As you well know, dogs get dirty and can begin to smell. Our thorough washing process will remove all the dirt from your dogs coat, including their backside, and in between their toes. We use only tearless shampoo on the face. For dogs with white coats, we also use a white enhancing shampoo. Additionally, a conditioner is used to provide extra softness for dogs with longer hair, and extra shine for short haired dogs. Flea & Tick and Medicated Baths are also available.
Nail trimming
- Most dogs biggest fear is getting their nails cut and can prove to be a difficult task to do on your own. Allow us to do it for you.
Medicated Shampoo
- Veterinarian-recommended itch-fighting ingredients which also relieve flaking and scaling. An aid in the treatment of hot spots and as first aid for scrapes and abrasions.
Flea & Tick Bath
- Kills adult fleas and ticks in your dog's coat, and leaves them smelling fresh and clean.
Cancellations
Cancellations happen and I understand schedules sometimes change. If you must cancel I ask that you give as much notice as possible. Chronic cancellations may result in the inability to book future appointments and a cancellation fee up to the amount of the grooming.
Cancellations within 24 hours of appointment time are subject to a $25.00 fee.
How much does it cost to groom my pet?
The grooming process is much more thorough and at times more difficult than getting your own hair cut at a salon. After all, you have a better chance of staying still than your pet, and you probably won't bite your hairdresser. Our packages are based on high-quality personable pet care. Packages can start at $55 for small dogs, but It really depends on the breed, size, condition and temperament of the pet.
Do you sedate pets who may be difficult to groom?
No, we will try to calm a pet down with gentle and positive methods and proceed with the grooming process as best as possible. If a pet is deemed too difficult to be groomed, we will send the pet home.
Hair cutting
- Depending on the breed of the dog and your hair style preference, we will cut, trim and style your dogs hair for maximum comfort and cuteness.
Ear cleaning
- We provide a basic ear cleaning to help prevent ear infections, and will let you know if any problems are apparent.
Anal gland expression
- These glands are occasionally refereed to as "scent glands", because they enable the dog to mark its territory and to identify each other. We have all seen how dogs greet each other by sniffing at the other's rear. When the anal glands fail to empty normally, the result can be impaction. Impaction is most common in small dog breeds, but can occur in any dog. Among the causes of anal gland impaction are : soft stools, small anal gland openings and overactive anal glands. The anal gland secretions become thick and pasty. Anal gland impaction is treated by manual emptying of the glands. This is a quick and painless process.
Brush Out
- For dogs with longer hair who are more prone to matting. Allow us to simply brush out your dogs hair for you.
Pre Booking
Most of my clients are on a rotating schedule of 3-4-5-6-7-8 week intervals. We occasionally accommodate our short-haired dogs that come in irregularly. We do spring and fall shave downs with extra cost .
We ask that you rebook your appointment when you leave. This way I can reserve a spot for your pet in our rotational schedule. Otherwise, I may be booked up to 2-3 weeks in advance. As of Labor day we will be booking our Christmas appointments. These special Holiday appointment book fast, so be sure to make yours early. Some of my clients book a year out for premium Christmas appointments. I will only be doing mini-grooms the week before Christmas to insure that everyone is able to have their appointment. We will be closed two weeks after Christmas.
Vaccination Requirements
Rabies vaccination are required for all pets receiving service over 6 months of age. I understand that small dogs may not be able to handle the vaccine until a later age, or may be completely intolerant of the vaccine. For these cases I must speak with your vet to verify that there is a medical reason that your pet is not vaccinated. I will also accept titter tests done within 6 months of service.
Injury
Although accidents are exceptionally rare, there is always a minute risk when working on a pet. Because of that chilltownpetspa Grooming would like to make you aware of our policies and procedures in the event of an incident. Our promise to you is that any incident will be reported to the owner immediately. If necessary we will transport your pet to a veterinarian. Any veterinary bills resulting from a pet being matted, senior, or from a pre-existing or unforeseeable condition will be the sole responsibility of the owner. Safety is our number one concern. We believe in honoring the trust you've given us by returning it to you.
How is a FURminator used for shedding pets?
A FURminator is a de shedding tool that removes the undercoat and loose hair in short-haired dogs and cats (and some long-haired pets). It reduces shedding up to 90% so all of that loose fur won't end up on your couch! This service is notINCLUDED in the grooming packages.
When should my puppy get his 1st grooming?
Professional grooming should start at 10 weeks of age (after second vaccination), to let the puppy become acquainted with the grooming process. Grooming in general, such as brushing at home, should start as early as possible. Starting early will imprint good behavior on your puppy that your groomer will surely appreciate!
How long should my pet go in-between grooming?
The frequency of grooming depends on the coat type and length, lifestyle and how much brushing and de tangling you do at home between grooming appointments. Dogs with longer hair styles or easily matted coat should be professionally groomed every 3 to 4 weeks. A dog with a short hair style or short coat can be groomed every 6 to 7 weeks.
Fluffing/Brushing
- Longer haired dogs need their hair combed through on a regular basis to prevent matting. After bathing, we comb and fluff out the hair of dogs that require it.
Health
If your pet has any medical problems, I ask to be made aware of them (i.e. seizures, arthritis, collapsing trachea, etc.) so that I may take whatever steps needed to keep your pet comfortable during the grooming process. I reserve the right to refuse service should the pet's condition require the supervision of a veterinarian, and will happily refer you to veterinary groomers in your area.
Payment
Payment is due upon completion of service. For first time clients we require cash only payment. Repeat clients may pay by cash or credit/debit through Pay Pal. Please specify if you plan to pay with Pay Pal prior to your appointment so that an invoice can be emailed to you. Pay Pal payment can be paid prior to service or at time of service, with my guidance, should it be needed.
We do not accept personal checks.
Temperament
If you pet has any history of biting, I require notification of this. The possibility of biting will not affect whether I may try to groom your pet, but it can help prevent injury. If your pet has some behavior issues, I will be happy to do what I can to help work through them.
I have extensive experience with fearful dogs, teaching them with gentle handling and loving care that grooming can be enjoyable. Please let me know prior to the appointment if your pet needs some special handling so that I can schedule sufficient time to meet these needs. If this special care requires more than an extra half hour of time there may be a special handling fee to account for the extra time spent.
No Shows
Habitual no shows may be subject to a fee up to the price of the grooming and may no longer be able to schedule future appointments.
